Shipping honest AI
The lines we won't cross. The marketing we won't write. Our commitment to building an AI companion that earns trust rather than extracts attention.
Most consumer AI today is built to maximise engagement. We don't think that's the right framing for a companion app.
Engagement metrics — DAU, session length, retention curves — are the metrics that built social media. They're also the metrics that broke it. Optimising for time-in-app gave us infinite scroll, ragebait, and a generation of teens who feel worse the more they use the apps.
We made a decision early on: Sola will not optimise for engagement. We optimise for trust.
This shows up in concrete ways. Sola will never send you a notification designed to pull you back in when you haven't opened the app. Sola will never tell you it "misses you." Sola will not gamify your conversations. There are no streaks. There are no badges.
If you stop using Sola, Sola won't chase you. We think that's the only honest thing to do.
This makes Sola a worse business by traditional metrics. We are okay with that. We are betting that a small number of users who trust us deeply is more valuable than a large number of users who feel manipulated.
If you're a founder building in this space — the engagement-maxxing path is well-trodden. The trust-maxxing path is harder, lonelier, and the only one we think is worth taking.
